Australia to introduce luxury car tax

The Australian Federal Government says its proposed luxury car tax will not have a major effect on the nation's automotive industry. The Government wants to increase the tax from 25 to 33 per cent. The Coalition opposes the rise and argues it will hurt the nation's car industry. But Industry Minister Kim Carr has told a Senate Committee there is evidence to show those claims are false. "The Treasury analysis that was conducted [concluded that] lifting the tax rate would have no significant effect on the Australian automotive industry," he said. "Unlike similar taxes in many other countries, Australia's luxury car tax is non-discriminatory; it applies in exactly the same way to imports and locally-produced vehicles."
